RILA
The Rila Mountain is located in Southwestern Bulgaria between the valley of the Struma river to the west and the Rhodopes mountains to the east. To the north it borders with the Samokov high plateau and to the south with the Pirin mountain. Rila is the highest mountain in the Balkan Peninsula (the highest peak is Moussala – 2925m). Rila mountain is a glaciated range, mostly granite, with spectacular peaks, vast corries and impressive tarns. Clear streams run fast in the steep gullies. The lower part of the mountain is covered by forests of white and black fir, spruce, white and black pine. On the upper slopes abound dwarf pine, vast meadows and rocky peaks. Panorama views are superb. Herds of chamois wander in the most secluded areas.

PIRIN

The Pirin mountain is also located in Southwestern Bulgaria between the valleys of the Struma river to the west and the Mesta river to the east. To the north it borders with the Rila mountain and to the south with the Slavyanka mountain. Pirin is the second highest mountain in Bulgaria with many peaks well over 2800 m. The Pirin mountain is extremely impressive with limestone and granite aretes, sharp pointed piramidal peaks, deep corries and beautiful glacial lakes. The steep slopes of the mountain are covered by dense forests of white and black fir, spruce, white and black pine, and dwarf pine. Herds of chamois wander in the most secluded areas.

RHODOPES

The Rhodopes are vast and very old mountains to the south of Bulgaria. Rila and Pirin mountains are their neighbours to the west, the Plain of Thrace borders the Rhodopes from the north and the east and their southern border is the Aegean Sea depression. The Rhodopes comprises of many rolling mountain ridges divided by deep river valleys and spacious hollows. The scenery in this mountain is really superb – gentle rolling hills, rich green valleys, magnificent limestone gorges, fascinating caves, Thracian and Roman roads, picturesque ancient villages with centuries old houses, mosques, churches and humpbacked bridges. The hospitality of the people in the mountains is famous and unhurried pace of life is really impressive. To say nothing of the delicious local food.
